Treasure Data Partners with Sierra Ventures, Raises $5M in Oversubscribed Series A Financing – New Investment To Drive Adoption of its Big Data Analytics Platform in the Enterprise

July 23, 2013 05:50 PM Eastern Daylight Time MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Treasure Data, the cloud-based analytics service, announced today that it has closed $5 million in Series A financing led by Sierra Ventures. This investment will fund global expansion of the company’s operations world-wide. As part of the transaction, Tim Guleri, Managing Director of Sierra Ventures, will join the Treasure Data Board of Directors.

“Sierra has a history of making early investments in game-changing technologies in the Information Management market such as Teradata and Greenplum. Cloud-based, big data analytics solutions are what businesses are demanding, illustrated by Treasure Data’s explosive growth over the past twelve months,” said Guleri. “We see their service as the next generation big data analytics platform — a compelling alternative to existing data warehouse solutions without the time, resources, and infrastructure investment required by these traditional solutions.”

Treasure Data’s big data analytics platform combines open source software and unique distributed systems technology to provide a robust, scalable, and flexible software service. Underpinning this service is the founding team’s deep understanding of Hadoop, a suite of open source software for big data, and distributed systems technology. Hiro Yoshikawa, CEO, spent years at Red Hat bringing the power of open source to the enterprise, and Kaz Ohta, CTO, founded the world’s largest Hadoop User Group in 2009. Sada Furuhashi, Architect, built Plazma, the columnar distributed storage system that gives Treasure Data superior performance over purely open source solutions. This winning combination of open-source innovation and purpose-oriented architecture was core to the success of Sourcefire, another company invested in by Guleri and Sierra Ventures.

“Our mission is to empower businesses to turn big data into immediate value by simplifying the entire process from data collection to analysis, creating a frictionless cloud analytics solution,” said Yoshikawa. “With Treasure Data, customers can be in full production in days to weeks, not the months or years typically required by existing solutions.”
